Guernsey Arts will be taking over Castle Cornet this year with an eclectic line up of activity and entertainment, working with the Museum Team to commemorate and celebrate the 81st anniversary of the Liberation of Guernsey.
With free entry from 10am until 4pm, a timetable of varied performances and activities will be taking place for the whole community to enjoy. Those who attend will be able to reflect in the quiet location of the South Battery: visitors to the Castle can listen to local poetry reflecting on Occupation and Liberation in the Islands, recorded as part of the Liberation 80 Poetry anthology. Celebrating our creative filmmakers, there will also be short film screening in an immersive environment of the Batteries.
As well as remembering our poignant history, families can expect to celebrate with a vibrant line up of theatre and music to dance the day away to. Living History and Façade Shows will transport you back to 1940s Guernsey with their storytelling, while the sounds of Ashley De Jersey Moore will sing all the highlights from the wartime era. We’ll be celebrating our local musicians with performances from Oh Crikey! and the Ukuladeez, finishing up the date with a young musicians showcase.
The Amherst Room will be used to host interactive arts and crafts activities, including exploring “Dig for Victory” with DIY model gardens, creating your own ID Card and decorating your own celebratory flag. 1940s wear is encouraged to join in the commemoration and celebration of this important date in our calendar and refreshments throughout the day will be available from Café Maeva.
Jade Kershaw, Community & Public Realm Officer for Guernsey Arts: “Guernsey Arts is thrilled to be arranging creative activities in the special settings of Castle Cornet. Guernsey Arts believes in using the Arts and creativity as a vehicle to help celebrate and reflect, something which is especially relevant for the Liberation of the Island.”
Helen Glencross, Head of Heritage Services: “We are always proud to work with Guernsey Arts and are extremely grateful to them for the imaginative and inclusive programme they have produced this year. Their commitment to promoting, supporting and inspiring access to the arts will help ensure the events at Castle Cornet are meaningful and engaging for all, complementing the Liberation Day celebrations along the seafront. We are pleased to be able to offer free entry to Castle Cornet on 9th May, welcoming everyone to take part in this special event.”
