The Liberation Concert will involve local musicians who will perform with the Biberach Youth Orchestra.
The performance, held on Saturday 10 May at 6pm in the Sir John Loveridge Hall, Beau Sejour, will celebrate the strong relationship that has been formed with Biberach, where more than 800 islanders were deported during the war.
The German Youth Orchestra will perform alongside the Guernsey Choral and Orchestral Society [GCOS], Guernsey Chamber Choir, Bel Canto, Guernsey Music Service students from Cantabile and the Youth Orchestra, and other local singers and musicians.
‘Music has played a key role in building our relationship with Biberach. Many of the musicians who are taking part in this concert have visited the town to perform over the years, and it is particularly important to involve our young people in this event’ Rachel Wright, GCOS conductor, said.
‘When I was choosing the programme, I wanted to find music that will remember, celebrate and commemorate our relationship with Biberach and the island’s liberation. I have included Mendelssohn’s Hear My Prayer and Parry’s I Was Glad and also wanted to feature, Maynine, which was written by the late Chris Claxton for the 65th anniversary and the mass Guernsey Sings event,’
The concert will also feature works by other local composers Lydia Sullivan-Pugh, Martin Cordall and songs written by Len Collins and Ernie Webster who were interned at Laufen Camp.
‘Bringing together over 250 musicians is quite an undertaking. We have started individual rehearsals and I am really excited to see it all come together.’
Deputy Sue Aldwell, Committee for Education, Sport and Culture, said: ‘The Liberation Concert is the perfect opportunity for our community to commemorate our island’s freedom alongside the liberation of the POW internment camp in Biberach in April 1945 by French forces.
‘A group of Biberach residents will also be travelling to the island along with the town’s Mayor to mark this significant milestone. We are anticipating an evening filled with beautiful music to connect us once again.’
