A new oral history project to record and preserve islanders’ memories is being launched by Guernsey Museum in partnership with BBC Radio Guernsey.
Together, we want to meet islanders and record their memories about life on the island. Farming, growing, fishing, family life, food, sport, traditions and events – the possibilities of what we could talk about are endless!
However, with the 80th anniversary of Liberation next year, the first memories we would like to capture are people’s experiences during the Second World War.
Building on the work produced in the 2005 People’s War Project, we would like to hear from islanders who stayed on the island during the German occupation, who were evacuated, deported, interned or served in the military. Individuals may have been living away from the island during the war and their stories are just as important.
Helen Glencross, Head of Heritage Services, said:
“Guernsey Museums is very excited to launch this new project. We look forward to learning more about our island and the experiences of those who live here. We will not only digitally archive these recordings for posterity, as part of our collections, but we also plan to share them in the future.”
Isla Blatchford, BBC Guernsey, said:
“As a Journalist, Guernsey girl and Mum to 2 young daughters I am keen to help preserve the stories of our past to share with our future generations. At BBC Guernsey we’re in the business of gathering and telling people’s stories. When I approached Guernsey Museums and Galleries about working together on a project ahead of the 80th anniversary of our Liberation, the Island Memories Project was born.
“Everyone has a story to tell, even if they don’t realise it. My grandparents were evacuated from the island during the German Occupation and I do regret not taking the time to ask them more about that time of their lives before it was too late. I want to make sure we record and keep the memories of those who are willing to share. BBC Guernsey is delighted to be partnering with Guernsey Museums and Galleries for this important project.”
The Island Memories Project launches on Friday 8th November. If you would like to participate or know of someone who could contribute to this project, please contact us at Guernsey Museum tel. 226518 or email [email protected]
