When Megs Bailey set out to decorate St Peter Port with bunting for Liberation Day, she never expected the response she received.. So far, 12,000 flags and 3,000 metres of bunting have been made – a testament to the enthusiasm and dedication of the local community.
Groups and individuals across the whole island have pitched in, some getting their sewing machines out for the first time in years. Charities such as GROW Limited, Age Concern, and the Ron Short Centre have involved their service users, spending time together creating pieces for this special project.
We’ve also seen contributions from many schools and a choir, with bunting coming in from all ages and backgrounds. The bunting project has also taken off further afield with makers from Sark and Herm having contributed, and even one strip all the way from Australia!
Many of those who have contributed to the project have said that they've loved the opportunity to feel more connected with the celebrations by giving something back in true community spirit.
A special contribution was made by His Excellency, Lieutenant Governor, Richard Cripwell who designed his own Power Rangers and Bright Tights-themed flag at La Houguette Primary School.
“The project has taken off beyond my expectations. We’ve loved seeing the whole community come together, and we can’t wait to see it all on display!” Megs Bailey, founder of the Liberation Community Bunting Project said.
The decorations will now expand beyond the seafront to include The Bridge, spreading the celebrations even further. Some bunting is already up for testing and the final display will be a fitting tribute to the community effort behind it.
We’re looking forward to seeing the final project come to life this May.
