Volunteers encouraged to register for 80th Liberation Day

Posted:

The Committee for Education, Sport and Culture and the Association of Guernsey Charities are encouraging members of the public to register their interest in volunteering at the 80th Liberation Day celebrations.

Co-ordinated by the Association of Guernsey Charities, the Liberation Day Volunteer Team will play a vital role in the event. From having a few hours to spare or taking on a leadership role to deliver activities on the day, support from the community will make a real difference.

Volunteers are needed to support the commemorative and celebratory events in St Peter Port and along the Cavalcade route, at parish events over the weekend or to help with deliveries during Liberation week.

‘We are hoping to build on the wonderful support the community gave the 2023 Island Games when we had an incredible response to help us deliver that fantastic week of sport.

“We are launching a new online platform for volunteering next year, which we hope to trial with the Liberation Day volunteers. The platform will enable charities to advertise their volunteering opportunities, keep track of their volunteers, and make it much easier for anyone interested in volunteering to find a suitable match. Volunteers are the backbone of the charitable sector, and this new platform will help boost volunteering,” said Wayne Bulpitt, Chair of the Association of Guernsey Charities.

Deputy Sue Aldwell, Committee for Education, Sport and Culture, added: ‘Liberation Day is such an important occasion for so many in our community as we remember all of those who were evacuated or continued to live on the island during the Occupation.

‘The day’s proceedings will not be possible without the help of volunteers and with 2025 marking the 80th anniversary, we are expecting large numbers in both St Peter Port and at the parish events. Volunteering allows you to be at the very heart of the celebration and your support is needed to ensure the milestone celebrations run smoothly.’

Voluntary roles will require different levels of physical fitness, and volunteers will be able to indicate their preference for positions when registering.

The Liberation Day Volunteer Team will be in touch with those who are interested in the new year, with further details about available roles and timeslots.
